UPDATE ON HB 435

Posted on February 25, 2025

During today’s meeting of the House Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Committee, Representative Matthew McQueen presented HB 435, the New Mexico Renewable Energy and Environmental Incentive Act. Although it did not receive approval to move to the House of Representatives agenda, it was tabled for refinements and hopefully will be reintroduced soon.

Representative McQueen admirably addressed thoughtful questions from the Committee about the industry, its regulations, and the bill’s impact while also illustrating how it would “fill a gap” in creating a formal process for approving renewable energy installations and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

We were pleased to see outstanding representation from the community and concerned organization members both at the meeting and virtually, where they could explain why the bill should be approved.

When more information about HB 435 becomes available, we will share it with you. In the meantime, please take a moment to thank Representative McQueen for his leadership in recognizing that the future of renewable energy in New Mexico needs more efficient oversight to preserve the safety and beauty of our state. His email address is matthew.mcqueen@nmlegis.gov.
